The Penrose Dual Phono Preamp embeds two stereo RIAA preamplifiers in a compact form factor. The preamplifiers offer a gain of 40 dB for Moving Magnet inputs. The device achieves RIAA equalisation with extremely low error margins and channel disparities. The input stage can be configured with the adequate capacitance and impedance to properly load the connected cartridge.

RIAA equalisation performance
We measured the RIAA equalisation accuracy of our preamplifier and compared it to equipment on the market. The graph on the left illustrates the deviation in dB from the RIAA curve over the audio spectrum. Any deviation is an alteration of the source material. The Mixer A is an analogue 4-channel mixer commonly found in clubs. The Mixer P is a market-leading 4-channel digital mixer.
Our preamplifier achieves very accurate RIAA equalisation over the entire audio spectrum.
Cartridge loading
A key factor of excellent phono performance that is often overlooked is the cartridge loading. Due to its electro-magnetical properties, a cartridge will interact with a preamplifier input stage and form a second-order low pass filter. The graph on the left illustrates the filter effect on frequency response. Depending on the properties of the cartridge, the total capacitance and the input impedance, important resonances and filtering can occur in the upper part of the audio spectrum.
Our preamplifier can be configured to a given input capacitance and impedance to eliminate these issues.
Listen to the Penrose Preamp
Using our tool, you can listen and compare our preamplifier to other mixers. It models the RIAA equalisation accuracy and cartridge loading into a precise simulation.
